There is conclusive evidence that N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is being created in our tap water, according to a recent study published in Environmental Science and Technology Letters1. NDMA is a potent carcinogen when ingested through ingestion of drinking-water2. NDMA forms in drinking water when chloramine – a disinfectant commonly added by water companies to kill bacteria- mixes with the drug methadone (which gets into tap water from people flushing it down toilets)3.

The Environmental Protection Agency does not regulate drugs in our tap water supply. “Ilene Ruhoy, a pediatric neurologist and environmental toxicologist who has studied the issue (of drugs in tap water), says ‘You’re talking about exposure to parts per million, parts per billion. And it’s a combination of drugs. It’s not just one drug in the water, it’s multitudes of. It’s exposure to these very, very minute amounts of these drugs, but many drugs over decades—ten, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 years.”4

NDMA is likely just one of the toxic chemical combinations that are occurring in our tap water as thousands of toxins – many unregulated, many patented and therefore of undisclosed components – mix together to form separate, possibly deadly combinations.
